Back to .500

Tough game last night.  We got off to a great start, James scored a spectacular goal in the first quarter to give us a 1-0 lead. And the way the boys were playing, I thought there would be several other goals throughout the night. The first half we were playing aggressive and determined to keep the ball off our side of the field and pushing it up on offense.  The Cyclones then, got a couple quick goals.  Two came from our defense just not attacking the player fast enough as he was approaching the goal, as that particular player was surprisingly able to shoot from 10-15 yards out, which he did and score. The other goal came from a throw in and the only player that touched the ball was ours, we were inside the orange crease at the time, so that goal should not have counted any way.

In the second half, which is when most of the goals against came, we looked a lot more reserved than we did in the first.  Not as eager to attack the ball and giving the other team a little more opportunity to drive it down on offense.  The Cyclones were a very good team and remain undefeated, so there is nothing for us to hang our heads about, at least not for very long.  We did not get out played last night, we just made a few errors that I as the coach, take full responsibility for and know it may come into account when the decesions are made next season as to whether or not to renew my contract.

We practice on Thursday at 6pm, field 9 and will work on some of these mental mistakes in preparation for our final game on Saturday October 16th.  Our record is currently 3-3-1. This last game will determine whether or not we have a winning season and I have a good feeling we will.  We will be playing the Avalanche who beat us once this season, and I think the boys are going to want some revenge.  It's been a good season so far, the boys have learned a lot, improved significantly and I believe, they have had a lot of fun.  Let's keep it up for one last match and finish strong.

Time for Redemption

After a tough 0-1 loss last week, our first and hopefully only loss of the season, we are up for some redemption tonight.  Last weeks game was certainly a tough one, everyone played great, we had a goal called back and our opponents who were mostly all bigger and older than most of our boys (almost all 1st graders) were able to squeeze one goal in and somehow keep us out.  We could not seem to penetrate their defense, but tonight is bound to be a different story.

After a great practice last Thursday and a long rested weekend, I think the Fire is going to come out pumped up for tonight's game.  So if your family and friends are up for some good soccer, make sure they plan to come out and cheer the Fire on.  And for those of you who do not regularly check the calendar on the blog, our game is tonight Sept. 21st at 6:45pm on Field 2 at the Wilson Y.

Go Fire,

Say a little prayer

One of our superstars is in the hospital.  Augustine is in some pretty bad pain and having some test run on his kidney tomorrow.  It appears he will need surgery next week to fix the problem.  Please pray for  Augustine  and the doctors as well, that they  know what to do and can put Augustin back to his good old happy soccer playing self real soon.

2 Down, 6 to Go

Great game boys! This one was much closer then Saturday's, but with a 2-0 win  it was a good one.  Several times, the boys were looking for each other to pass to, which was a great step,  we just need to work on getting in a position that will give us an advantage by making the pass.  Defense was strong, but we still need to get a little more aggressive at attacking the ball.  We changed up a few positions today and it worked out well, but we've got to improve upon  the good work you have all done so far.  There are 2 weeks before our next game, meanwhile I will spend some time reviewing the tape and when we get together for practice, Thursday at 6pm, come ready to  work.  But for tonight, enjoy the sweet victory.  Congratulations Fire!

Big Day Tomorrow

In preparation for tomorrow, I went for a light 4 mile run along the river. I wanted to make sure my mind was clear as I begin the strategy session tonight. Theresa took some video of the practice yesterday, so I'll be going over the tape to figure out the positions everyone will best fill

Make sure those boys get some rest tonight and encourage them to dream about the ball going in the back of the net, our opponent's net that is. See you all tomorrow, it's bound to be a great day.

Game 1 Next

Great practice out there today guys. Ball control has vastly improved since 2 weeks ago. Let's try to stay focused and get some rest, game day is next.
We've got to make today's practice count. First game is in two days, against the Tornados. The boys are making progress, but we've got to get one more good session in before Saturday. Needing to sharpen up our dribbling skills and look for the open man.
